From the section Football Watson was a trailblazer who helped transform how football was played There are two murals of black footballers facing one another across an alleyway in Glasgow. One helped shape football as we know it, the other is Pele. Andrew Watson captained Scotland to a 6-1 win over England on his debut in 1881. He was a pioneer, the world's first black international, but for more than a century the significance of his achievements went unrecognised. Research conducted over the past three decades has left us with some biographical details: a man descended of slaves and of those who enslaved them, born in Guyana, raised to become an English gentleman and famed as one of Scottish football's first icons. And yet today, 100 years on from his death aged 64, Watson remains something of an enigma, the picture built around him a fractured one. His grainy, faded, sepia image evokes many differen...

Dollar-billionaires: South Africa’s ‘richest citizens’ all live in these three cities

South Africa's dollar-billionaires don't ALL live in Stellenbosch - but you may recognise a couple that do. Here's where our wealthiest citizens call home.

South Africa has five – count them, five – dollar-billionaires currently residing in the country. With Elon Musk and Natie Kirsch now naturalised American citizens, we unfortunately can’t claim them as our own. Lord knows SARS would have a field day if we could, mind, and for what’s its worth, the remaining mega-rich locals have their ‘preferred spots’.

MOST OF SA’S DOLLAR-BILLIONAIRES ‘LIVE IN THE WESTERN CAPE’

A majority of these dollar-billionaires are in the Western Cape – the other two are both based in Johannesburg. Durban is home to 3 400 dollar-millionaires, but the city has so far been unable to tempt the super-wealthy to the east coast. Pretoria has over 100 multi-millionaires, worth $10 million or more, but no-one with a nine-zero bank balance has set up shop.

One of the EFF’s favourite attack lines of recent years has been to slam ‘white monopoly capital’ and its alleged base in Stellenbosch – but the richest person in South Africa can actually be found at the opposite end of the country. We’ve got a very brief breakdown of the big-bucks-billionaires below:

WHERE DO SOUTH AFRICA’S DOLLAR-BILLIONAIRES LIVE?

(All figures taken from Forbes)

JOHANNESBURG

  • – Nicky Oppenheimer: With $8 billion in the bank, the heir to the De Beers mining fortune is SA’s richest man.
  • – Patrice Motsepe: The only black African in the dollar-billionaires club almost doubled his wealth to $2.9 billion this year.

CAPE TOWN

  • – Koos Bekker: The head honcho at Naspers, worth $2.8 billion, is the solitary dollar-billionaire in the Mother City.

STELLENBOSCH / CAPE WINELANDS

  • – Johann Rupert: One of the better-known billionaire boys of Mzansi, Rupert has at least $7.2 billion to fall back on.
  • – Michiel le Roux: He joins two other big-hitters in the Western Cape, and the Capitec founder is $1.1 billion to the good.

LIFESTYLES OF THE RICH AND THE FAMOUS…

As we reported earlier, some of the wealthiest tourists in the world have found a way to visit Mzansi through the pandemic, and although the luxury holiday market has been hurt by the pandemic, millionaires are still getting their holidays in.

It’s more than fair to state that no other country can offer the multitude of natural wonders that you find within our borders, and according to the Wealth Report, High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) seem to prefer trips to destinations such as Cape Town, Franschhoek, Umhlanga, Kruger National Park, and the Singita Lodge at Sabi Sands.
