JOHANNESBURG - Hastings Mqhayi is getting ready for a fight with the South African government over the design of the country's flag.
He claims he's the original designer and government is ignoring his calls to be recognised.
Mqhayi says he wants the true symbolism of the flag to be known.
"The truth about what took place when one was designing the flag must be known," he said.
"When one looks at the flag it's a national symbol and even if I ask you what is the meaning of the flag, there's no proper legal document that is stating the meaning of the South African flag."
The Arts and Culture Department's Themba Mabaso said Mqhayi had two claims to make.
“Because of this particular claim we took it as something that we need to do thoroughly than to rush it for the sake of bringing a conclusion very fast.
"Therefore we took time to make sure that we get it right," Mabaso said.
He said a letter was sent to Mqhayi, explaining how the process will unfold.
“In the month of May, Mqhayi will be able to get his reply."
