 I have lived in Pretoria for half my life, but even at almost 50, l still am not ready for mornings like this . I step out of  home in the morning at 7 a.m., greeted by a warm, gentle breeze and sunshine so golden it felt like summer had arrived overnight. The sky was clear; the jacaranda trees glowed purple; the air smelled of warmth and possibility. “Perfect day,” l muttered, locking his door. By the time l drive out—five minutes later—the sky starts to be darkened. A cold wind came crawling in from nowhere, sweeping dust across the pavement. The temperature dropped so suddenly that  l have  to switch the heater for warmth. Laughing. “Ah, Pretoria… you never disappoint.” Halfway to the office, the heavens opened. Not soft rain— a storm . Sheets of water hammered the road, street gutters overflowed instantly, and distant thunder rolled like a grumpy giant waking up too early. Thieves breach security at SA Air Force base

Thieves managed to breach security at a SA Air Force base and break into an office at the weekend.

Hoedspruit Air Force Base, on the border of the Kruger National Park near Mozambique, is home to 19 Squadron, a helicopter unit.

SA National Defence Force (SANDF) spokesperson Brig-Gen Mafi Mgobozi confirmed the incident but did not provide details, other than to confirm the break-in occurred at the finance office at the base.

The break-in allegedly occurred on Sunday evening and an angle-grinder was used. Cash and other valuables were reportedly taken.

Hoedspruit is a modern fighter base, formerly known as “Fighter Town” when the Mirage F1 and Mirage III French fighter jets were based there. It is now home to A109 LUH and Oryx helicopters.

“The SANDF would like to reiterate that all or any acts of criminality will not be tolerated. Perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” said Mgobozi.
